June 2010 LEAF Update

Well snow and all, spring is here.  I have just met with the North Parks Division Supervisor Judy Herman and she is working diligently getting their spring crews assembled and trained.   We are lucky to have Chris Kuzma return to the team this year.  Chris was originally in charge of Hawkwood's Landscape transformation during  the first few years of the program. He is a very hard worker and is thrilled to be back.  We are also crossing our fingers that last years gardener Carly will be back this year.  She was passionate about gardening and put a lot of thoughtful care into last season's flower beds and landscaping maintenance.  Carly drew up some wonderful plans for the new season I hope you will enjoy the new varieties and colors that she has created this year.  To shake up the monotony of color, a new color theme will be in the flower pots so that they match the nearby entrance features.   We requested more color and less foliage in the flower pots so that the boulevards will be more eye catching this year.

To date the boulevards are starting to turn green.   The fall fertilizer is a slow release product that appears to be doing a great job along the medians.  We are waiting for more heat and rain and then we'll see the grass mowing begin.  All the sports fields have been dethatched, swept and cleared.  All the boulevards and medians have been swept of gravel and dead grass.  Spring clean up is under way.

To avoid any possible snow fall or unexpected frost we decided that we will begin planting all flowers in the first week of June.  Last year we narrowly missed a disaster by delaying planting in late May.   The City wisely held off the delivery date of the flowers to keep them in the greenhouse.  As a result we didn't have to scramble to find new flowers and we saved the program from a potentially large financial hit.

We would love your feedback on how you feel about the color and  foliage selection this year.  If you have any sites in your neck of the woods that look like they need a little more love and attention from The Parks Department please feel free to leave us a message on our hot line number at (403) 239- 2211  or send us an email via our website at www.hawkwoodcalgary.com .   Hawkwood is a large community and we would like to make sure that all areas of concern are addressed.

We hope that the lovely flowers and  green spaces warm your heart this summer as you turn the corner towards home.   Enjoy the show!
