Well…once again the weather was not on my side, but at least it wasn’t raining or worse-snowing! We had a pretty good turnout considering the fierce winds.

Congratulations to all the young people who took the time and effort to decorate their bikes and for participating in the bike parade. Way to show your community spirit! Also congratulations to Cathy Boulanger for winning the “Family Movie Night” Basket. I am sure you and your family will enjoy it!
The day started out with a bike parade, followed by loads of activities for all ages, including the rock climber, mini golf, cow milking and we also had a kid’s rodeo where the cowboys and gals raced around on ponies, picking up chickens and pigs! We even had great colour commentary from Phil Heaton, who was our volunteer Rodeo Announcer. Thanks for making it that much more fun Phil! There was gold digging and bubble blowing, carnival games and to top it off we served hot dogs and hamburgers, drinks, chips and even had an ice cream sundae bar! After all that, we threw in a candy toss to end the day.I hope all of you that came out, enjoyed yourselves. I know I did!
We had a lot of volunteers helping out at the Family Fun Day. It is because of you, it was successful. I would especially like to thank the “newbies” who came to volunteer as well as all the junior and high school students. Your time was much appreciated! Thanks to Diane Heaton, for Emceeing- you are a natural, Lauren Kirychuk and Deb Steel for getting all the food and necessities and to JoAnne MacGreggor, Cathy Boulanger and Shawna Hansen for all their help in organizing the kid’s activities.
Finally, I would like to thank the HCA Social Committee for making my role on the committee such an enjoyable experience. I have made some great friends over the years by volunteering in both the community and in the school. I encourage all of you to come out and do the same! Involvement brings communities together.
Fifth Annual Family Winter Festival
Despite the weather, our 5th Annual Winter Festival saw about 75 people come out to brave the great Canadian cold to partake in the festivities. Thank you to all who came and endured the wind and snow!
Once again, the Hawkwood Community Association would like to thank SUPERSTORE for donating the hot dogs, hot chocolate and cookies for all to enjoy. Also to the City of Calgary-Rec Department for donating the sound system, so we could enjoy some good music on a blustery day and to the Skate Shack for the use of their skate rental equipment.
The next social event will be the Picnic in the Park. We have the Turbines band lined up again this year for your listening pleasure. There will be great things planned for the whole community. We look forward to sharing an old fashioned hoe down with y’all!
Even after all those days of really nice weather, where the rink looked more like a small lake, our “Rink Rat Dads” managed to keep the ice in good condition for everyone to enjoy. You guys rock.
Volunteers are a huge part of pulling functions, like these, together. Bruce Lee, (my new best bud!)For the countless hours of hitting the pavement trying to come up with donations and all your cool new ideas on how to make this a true event- thank you and I look forward to working with you again! Teresa Hirata and JoAnne MacGregor- without your clever ideas and resources, things wouldn’t run as smoothly as they do, you gals are awesome.
